Celebrating Book Lovers Day with Katie Kolodinski

As a passionate reader, books have always been a defining source of inspiration for me. They are my escape and inspiration. On Book Lovers Day, I’m excited to share my current literary journey and some favourite reads that have been influencing my thinking and designs.

“How many books is too many books to read simultaneously?” is a question I often ask as I juggle multiple reads. Right now, I’m reading three books:

  1. The Art of Joy by Goliarda Sapienza
  2. The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm
  3. Nina Simone’s Gum by Warren Ellis.

Each one offers a unique window into different worlds and ideas.

I also love getting book recommendations from friends that broaden my horizons. Olesya Rulin suggested The Secret Language of Flowers, a beautiful exploration of floral symbolism. Miranda Skoczek recommended No Friend But the Mountains, a powerful and moving read. Laura Prochowski introduced me to The Mushroom at the End of the World and A Neotropical Companion, both offering a deep connection to nature and sustainability.

On this special Book Lovers Day, I encourage you to explore one of my recommendations or find your own, and let it bring joy to your everyday life.

The three books Katie is currently reading…

The Art of Joy by Goliarda Sapienza|
The Art of Joy
follows the life of Modesta, a woman born in Sicily at the beginning of the 20th century. Through her journey of self-discovery, rebellion, and resilience, Sapienza explores themes of freedom, love, and the pursuit of happiness. This novel is a testament to the strength and spirit of women, making it an inspiring read.
The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm
In this classic, Erich Fromm explores the complexities of love, offering profound insights into human relationships. The Art of Loving delves into various forms of love—romantic, brotherly, motherly, self-love, and love for humanity. Fromm's philosophical yet accessible approach makes this book a valuable guide to understanding and nurturing love in our lives.
Nina Simone’s Gum by Warren Ellis
Recently finished by Katie, Nina Simone’s Gum is a unique memoir by musician Warren Ellis. The book centres around a piece of chewed gum left by Nina Simone on her piano, which Ellis kept as a cherished memento. Through this object, Ellis weaves a narrative about the profound impact of Simone's music and the deep connections that art can create. This book is a touching tribute to one of music's greats and a testament to the lasting power of artistic inspiration.
